Hydration the Key to Staying Healthy in the HeatOne of the most important things to keep in mind this summer is hydration. With the heat and humidity outside, it doesn’t take long for your body to need water. For people with diabetes, staying hydrated can help prevent dangerous fluctuations in blood sugar levels.Dehydration is serious; it doesn’t just mean you are thirsty. In fact, severe dehydration can lead to reduced sweating and urine output and can result in damage to the brain and other organs. Dehydration can even be deadly. You shouldn’t wait to feel thirsty. That means you’re waiting too long. Proper hydration makes things easier for the kidneys and gives the pancreas the fluid it needs to properly produce the insulin that regulates blood sugar levels. So what should you drink? First of all, stay away from caffeine and alcohol. These substances act as diuretics and will make you even more dehydrated. After an active day in the summer heat, water and rest might be all you need. But sometimes you will have to replenish your electrolyte and potassium levels. While sports drinks like Gatorade® and Powerade® promise to help you out in the electrolyte department, it’s important to find the calorie-free and sugar-free varieties. The regular sports drinks are loaded with calories and sugar, which can complicate matters. Don’t let something like dehydration keep you on the sidelines this summer. By being smart and drinking plenty of water, you will make managing your diabetes that much easier. Reprinted with permission of Health Alliance Medical Plans |
